“Why do we need steel?”

Steel is omnipresent in the everyday environment: parts of the car, the bridge over which the car drives or even the lamppost that stands at the side of the road and provides light on the street. But what exactly is steel, how is it treated and how can it be produced in a more energy-efficient way? IWT colleague Tim Oelker from the heat treatment department explains these questions and more in the new episode of "Tonspur Wissen", a podcast by the Leibniz Association and Rheinische Post, hosted by journalist Ursula Weidenfeld.
In an understandable and vivid way, the two talk about steel production as an economic sector, sustainability and everyday research - and not least about the question of whether the "gear wheel needs to be reinvented"?
