Ogün Baris Tapar wins Aichelin Young Speaker Award
Great success for IWT junior scientist Ogün Baris Tapar: at the 2nd International Conference on Quenching and Distortion Engineering (QDE 2021), he receives the Aichelin Young Speaker Award for his lecture on in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The prize for the best talk by all participants under 35 years of age comes with 1500 euros in prize money.
With the topic "Time-resolved Investigations During Low Pressure Carburizing by Means of In-situ Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction", the scientific assistant from the Department Physical Analysis impressed the participants on the second digital day of the conference - and also the jury of the Achelin Young Speaker Award. In his talk, Mr Tapar vividly demonstrated how, in a joint project with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Institute of Applied Materials - Materials Science, a new heat treatment chamber was developed and implemented into the beamline P07 at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY). A particular challenge here was to miniaturize and adapt the chamber to allow X-ray diffraction measurements with high time and spatial resolution during the low-pressure carburizing process. The solution developed in the joint project made it possible for the first time to analyse the development of the microstructure of the steel during the low-pressure carburisation very precisely using synchrotron X-ray measurement. In addition, valuable information on the optimal design of the low-pressure carburisation process could be derived for industrial use.
The jury praised the fact that the presentation by the IWT junior scientist was not only excellently presented, but also that its content represented a topic of high scientific relevance with reference to industrial practice. Mr Tapar thus prevailed over six other presentations by participants under the age of 35. A total of around 80 people took part in the international online conference, which was co-organised by Leibniz-IWT.
QDE 2021, which was held as part of the European Conference on Heat Treatment ECHT 2021, focuses on current findings and developments from industry and science on key aspects of quenching and the associated dimensional and shape changes.
