It is with deep sadness that the Institute has learned of the passing of Prof. Dr. Hermann Vetters. 

With his passing, the world has lost an extraordinary and dynamic figure who enriched Leibniz-IWT for many years with his knowledge, his drive, and his warm personality.  Prof. Dr. Vetters was born in 1941, studied metallophysics at the University of Vienna, and worked at the institute in Bremen from 1969 to 2005 (which was then known as the Institute for Hardening Technology and later as the Institute for Materials Science). As head of the Metallographic Analysis Department starting in 1987, he played a decisive role in shaping it with great dedication, continuously developing it, and providing crucial impetus for its successful direction. 

During his 36 years as a researcher at IWT and as an associate professor at the University of Nancy, he published over 30 papers as an author or co-author in the HTM Journal of Heat Treatment of Materials alone, where he later also served as a guest reviewer.

His scientific research findings and activities in Collaborative Research Center 372 “Spray Compaction” will remain just as unforgettable as his long-standing commitment to AWT e.V., which awarded him the AWT Pin of Honor in 2006 in recognition of his work.  

With his professional expertise, his foresight, and his infectious enthusiasm for materials science, he has left a lasting mark far beyond the borders of Bremen. For example, the contact he established with the University of Nancy continues to this day as a well-established exchange program for young students. 

Leibniz-IWT will remember Dr. Hermann Vetters with gratitude as a valued colleague, an inspiring supervisor, and a remarkable person. His legacy will live on at the institute and beyond.
