The Institute congratulates former colleague Vera Friederici, who successfully defended her doctorate on 13.08.24. During her time in our department Mechanical Properties, she worked intensively on calculating the service life of hardened rolling bearing rings in wind turbines based on the simulation of spatial crack propagation under operationally relevant load conditions - a project entirely dedicated to renewable energies and sustainability. 

Her work has helped to make design methods more reliable and maintenance intervals for wind turbines more targeted. Vera Friederici used the simulation of crack growth (with a previously experimentally determined crack growth rate) in a ring as a novelty.
