The Institute congratulates Mr. Ogün Baris Tapar on his successfully defended PhD on November 7, 2024.
In his work, he has set up a new experimental chamber to investigate the process of low-pressure carburization of steels. Using strong X-rays at DESY, on Hereon's beamline P07, he carried out novel in-situ experiments and developed the necessary data evaluation to analyze the carbon uptake with high time and spatial resolution in the material during the process.
He was thus able to prove experimentally for the first time that the solubility limit of austenite is reached within a few seconds and that carbides are also formed directly in the outermost edge zone, which dissolve again during the subsequent process steps. With this work, Ogün Baris Tapar has created new foundations for process simulation and also for the optimization of industrial process implementation.
