When components fail in use, every detail counts: How did the damage occur? What stresses caused it? And how can such incidents be avoided in the future? The Leibniz-IWT gets to the bottom of these questions.

The institute investigated a breakage for the Formula Student Team Bremergy e.V. at the University of Bremen and Bremen University of Applied Sciences in the beginning of september: During a race at the Hockenheimring, the wheel rim of one of their vehicles broke. Dr.-Ing. Andree Irretier from the MPA analyzed the damage in the laboratories and searched for the causes – a task that combines practical research with state-of-the-art materials analysis.
