Abstract:
Systematic failure analysis is an established procedure for determining the cause of a component or machine failure. Determining the primary cause of damage serves to initiate remedial measures and thus also to prevent further consequential damage. The work in this extremely varied area is explained using selected and sometimes unusual case studies. Mechanical-technological material testing and metallographic analysis form one aspect of damage analysis.
The mechanical-technological testing of metallic materials has been expanded at the MPA Bremen so that it is now also possible to characterize the material behaviour under hydrogen-like temperatures (20 K). The presentation will also provide an insight into the available testing options.
