Nitriding and nitrocarburizing is a key topic when it comes to improving the performance of parts and components in transportation and mechanical engineering. In addition to the primary applications of increasing strength and reducing wear, the process is also increasingly being used in conjunction with post-oxidation as an environmentally friendly corrosion protection treatment. New application developments for austenitic steels and for micromachinability with diamond tools show that the potential is far from exhausted.
