Since 1975 the Leibniz Institute for Materials Engineering - IWT has been a foundation under private law. The founders of the Leibniz-IWT are the AWT - Arbeitsgemeinschaft Wärmebehandlung und Werkstofftechnik e. V. and the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

AWT – Arbeitsgemeinschaft Wärmebehandlung und Werkstofftechnik e. V.

For more than 60 years, the AWT has stood for exchange and knowledge in the field of heat treatment and materials engineering. The working group primarily promotes the transfer of knowledge and professional exchange between science and industry. To this end, the AWT initiates its own research projects and sets standards throughout Europe with professional trade events. The AWT is a member of the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations "Otto von Guericke" e. V. and has the possibility to apply for projects of industrial joint research.

Free Hanseatic City of Bremen

Leibniz-IWT is registered in the register of foundations with legal capacity under civil law with its seat in the state of Bremen. Members of the IWT Board of Trustees are representatives of the Senator for Science and Ports and the Senator for Economics, Labour and Europe.
