SFB 570 Distortion Engineering

The goal of the SFB 570 is to explore the intrinsic reasons for the distortion of steel components during heat treatment. For this, three selected model components, namely bearing ring, shaft and gear wheel, will be investigated within their manufacturing chain. The engineering ability implies to control the causes of distortion, on the one hand in the sense of a low-distortion or distortion-adapted design and manufacturing of component-parts and, on the other hand, by a selective application of distortion measures for the compensation of the distortion of component-parts. So far, distortion was considered mainly as a problem caused by heat treatment, and isolated optimization measures have been applied to single manufacturing steps, not to the whole process or the manufacturing chain respectively. In opposite to this approach, the SFB 570 aims at optimizing the manufacturing process as a whole. Only a consideration of the distortion as property of the whole manufacturing chain (system-oriented view) can be successful. That is why the interactions between the influencing factors of distortion from all manufacturing steps must also be identified and understood with regard to their effect on the resulting distortion of component-parts. By co-operation of the relevant technical disciplines, the SFB 570 strives for a comprehensive analysis and description of the problem of distortion.
