In the department „Multiphase Flow, Heat and Mass Transfer“, research and development activities are concentrating on multiphase processes for production, handling and conditioning of dispersed phases as powders, particles or droplets. Especially the analysis of phase interactions at the phase boundaries of particles with their liquid or gaseous environment, which are impressed by multiphase momentum-, heat- and mass-transfer processes, is primarily aimed.

Essential applications of the multiphase flow research are processes with spray flows, from the production and handling of metallic and ceramic particles, from spray drying, Spray Forming and Thermal Process Technology.

Basic analyses of multiphase systems and applied research on the use of e.g. multiphase cooling processes in the framework of heat treatment processes of metals are examined.

For scientific objectives of the department “Multiphase Flow” the use of laser optical tools from fluid- and particle-measurement techniques in combination with advanced numerical modelling and simulation are established. Based on this, appropriate methods for effective process configurations and process optimization are derived and verified.
