Process and Chemical Engineering is one of the three central research divisions of the IWT Foundation Institute of Material Science and is led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Lutz Mädler in combination with the Particle and Process Engineering group at the University of Bremen. The division is centered around the synthesis, processing, modeling and characterization of particles in the gas phase. The main areas of research and teaching focus on reactive and non-reactive spraying and deposition processes (flame spray pyrolysis, spray forming, powder production, spray cooling), simulation and optimization of multiphase phenomena as well as process and particle characterization using electromagnetic waves. These core capabilities are reflected in the research activities of the following four groups:

Reactive Spraying
 | Head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Lutz Mädler
Design of spraying systems
Integrated aerosol processing
In-situ synthesis of highly porous structures for sensing and catalytic applications
Synthesis of nanoparticles and functional surfaces
Design of nanomaterials for bio-interactions

Powder and particle measurement
 | Head: Dr.-Ing. Thomas Wriedt
Soot Characterization
Total internal reflection microscopy (TIRM)
Characterization of the erythrocyte using light scattering
Scattering by complex particles using a multiple scattering approach
Fast multipole method(FMM) to accelerate the discrete sources method (DSM)
T-Matrix Method for biaxially anisothropic particles
New light scattering portal for the light scattering community
overview

Multiphase Flow, Heat- and Mass-Transfer
 | Head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Udo Fritsching

Melt Atomization and Spray Forming
 | Head: Dr.-Ing. Volker Uhlenwinkel
Process analysis and development
Integrative spray processes
Particle characterization
New alloys and metal matrix composites
Coatings and layered materials
Functully graded materials
Process simulation and modelling
overview

Beside research activities of the main division Chemical and Process Engineering there is a close relationship by a cooperation agreement with the University of Bremen. Prof. Dr.- Ing. habil. Lutz Mädler is full faculty in the field Particle and Process Engineering (FG 1) in the department of Production Engineering of the University Bremen and is the director of the main division ‘Process and Chemical Engineering’. This close personnel and institutionally interdependence is anexcellent precondition for theoretical and application-oriented education of thestudents benefiting the transition in praxis.
