The loading and functional behaviour of components is considerably influenced by the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of the surface and near-surface zones. The knowledge of these properties is thus a crucial condition for the comprehension and the technical evaluation of surface heat treated, machined and/or coated components. Therefore the application and further development of physical research methods for the characterisation of surfaces and near-surface volumes of most diverse materials, are the emphasis of research and development within the department. Among the measuring methods, the X-ray fine structure measuring procedures and the optical emission spectrometry rank.
