The activities of the main division ‘Materials Science’ are, among other things, the realization of scientific events as well as comprehensive experimental and theoretical works in the fields of:

  • Heat treatment of metals
  • Surface engineering
  • Characterization of material microstructures
  • mechanical properties
  • Optimization of material properties for working practice

Furthermore the main division ‘Materials Science’ is engaged in the working fields

  • Testing and investigation of failure case studies
  • Consulting, information, and advice for industry, authorities, and individuals

Each of these fields of activity will be handled cooperatively within the five departments of the main division ‘Materials Science’. Main topics of the five departments:

Heat Treatment
 | Head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Franz Hoffmann
Through and surface hardening Annealing processes
Thermochemical heat treatment processes
Sensors of heat treatment

Beside research activities of the main division Materials Science a close relationship with the University of Bremen exists due to a cooperation agreement. Prof. Dr.- Ing. Zoch administrates the field Materials Science (FB 11) in the faculty Production Engineering of the University of Bremen and is the director of the main division‘Materials Science’. This close personnel and institutional interdependence is an excellent precondition for theoretical and application-oriented education of the students benefiting the transition in praxis.
