    IWT Overview

Interdisciplinary Research for the Changing World of Metalworking

We at the IWT develop the technologies that will be used in future metalworking. We are committed to putting our comprehensive know how and our
broad range of technical equipment at your service, with the aim of solving
    your particular metalworking problems.

The IWT emerged from the former Institute of Hardening Technology in Bremen and is an institution with a rich research tradition of more than 50 years. The overall objective of the IWT is to carry out multidisciplinary basic and applied research in metalworking. The IWT is the only research centre in Germany that has united the three disciplines materials science, process engineering and manufacturing technologies as equal-ranking divisions working together under one roof. Thanks to this structure, the IWT is able to solve technological problems for metalworking companies on the interdisciplinary level without the usual time-consuming process of “coordinate and consent”. Established at the campus of the University of Bremen, the IWT’s know-how is supplemented through close networking with other research institutions and fields of the faculty Manufacturing Process of the University of Bremen.

    Above 50 Years IWT Bremen

IWT is looking back on more than 50 years history.

    • 1950 The institute is founded under the name Institute for
      Hardening Technologies (IHT) in Bremen-Lesum
    • 1975 The legal form changes to a foundation under private law
    • 1986 The Official Materials Testing Laboratory (MPA) of the
state of Bremen is integrated into the IWT
    • 1986 The institute is enlarged by the additional departments Manufacturing Technologies and Process Engineering and renamed to Foundation Institute of Materials Science (IWT)
    • 1989 The IWT moves to a new building in the Technology
      Park of the University Bremen

    Organizational structure

Unique in Germany, the IWT combines three major scientific disciplines on equal terms: materials science, process engineering, and manufacturing technologies. The Official Materials Testing Laboratory (MPA) of the state of Bremen was established in 1986. The Laboratory for Precision Machining emanates from the field Manufacturing Processes of the University of Bremen (faculty Production Engineering) and works directly with the IWT as an independent research institution.
